Despite the best efforts of a global pandemic to steal our joy, spring has come to central Iowa. In our walks around town, we witness not only returning robins and green grass but also brilliant yellow and pure white daffodils. I took a bike ride in Pella this past Saturday to view other signs of spring. Although the Pella Historical Society had to make the unfortunate (but wise) decision of canceling Tulip Time this year, the tulips themselves are showing great promise of a late April or early May bloom. Another sign of spring is seeing the children <span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt;">outside. Our town’s playgrounds have been roped off with yellow caution tape but that can’t stop the children from playing. One favorite activity is using sidewalk chalk to make colorful designs and write encouraging words. Last Saturday one eastside family was coloring in a beautiful stained glass cross on their driveway. While riding my bike on the Volksweg Trail, my spirit was lifted up by two important words written in sidewalk chalk: JOY and HOPE.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">When Easter comes each year, it brings us Hope and Joy. Certainly Easter will feel different for us this year. It just won’t feel the same without our large group gatherings for Easter worship, Easter egg hunts or Easter dinners with extended family. Many of our local churches have opted for virtual worship using video technology or Facebook live. Perhaps it’s helpful to realize that the very first resurrection appearances were not large group gatherings. In fact, the resurrection account at the end of Matthew’s Gospel mentions only Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, easy qualifying for the guidelines put in place by Gov. Kim Reynolds to prohibit gatherings of more than ten people. Even without a massive number of people, Easter is still coming. In fact, Easter is now here and there’s nothing the coronavirus can do to stop it.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">How will you celebrate the new life brought about by the resurrection of Jesus Christ? Allow me to make two suggestions. Read Matthew 28 or a similar Scripture at the end of one of the gospels. Reflect on the new life that has come to you through our Living Lord Jesus. After the Bible reading, slow yourself down by practicing a “breath prayer.” In a breath prayer, you breathe in God’s grace and breathe out God’s praise. For Easter, breathe in “Christ is Risen” and breathe out a strong “Alleluia!” Try this several times. I’ve been reading about breath prayer and other spiritual practices in the Spiritual Disciplines Handbook: Practices that Transform Us by Adele Ahlberg Calhoun. Calhoun suggests that we breathe in “Healer” and breathe out “speak the word and I shall be healed.” (p. 204) This will propel your prayers toward the healing of the world during our current health crisis. In this radically different Holy Week may you become more aware of the real presence of the Living Christ, the Son of God who restores life.
I have been so blessed to be able to lead this family for the Kingdom of God. It is so much fun and crazy at times too!!
I am in full time ministry and my wife stays home with the little ones. I am the Founder and Executive Director of Discover Hope 517 Ministry. I’m also going to school for my Commission Pastor degree. God have given me such an opportunity to be a part of the mission for the Kingdom. Discover Hope have been an inspiration to me and a great way for me to give back. To make a difference one life at a time.

2. What did it mean to receive the key to the city of Newton?

Words can’t explain how it felt to receive such a reward. Not only was God glorified with receiving such an award, but God allow the ministry to lead the charge. I’m truly honored that God has allow the ministry to be known in the community and that it is making a difference in many lives. We believe that God is breaking the bondage of addiction. Jesus will become the face of recovery!!! There are so many that played a part in the growth and sustainability of Discover Hope. The leadership team of 12, all the volunteers that serve and give. All the financial partnership of individuals, Church partnerships, and Community support. Our heart is that God will continue to use Discover Hope to change lives in our community as well as surrounding communities. To change a Life, Is to change a Community!

3. How has Discover Hope 517 made a big impact?

God is using DH517 to set apart the unhealthy community and begin to focus on creating a place where lives and families can be healed and restored through the power of the Holy Spirit. Many peoples are coming to DH517 to seek something new. They are finding that in Jesus life can be redefined and true transformation can take place. Out with the old and in with the new! 2nd Corinthians 5:17. Our community center is a place where anybody can come and start their recovery, serve, build healthy relationships, grow spiritually, or just pray. It's truly a safe refuge for many who are looking to change their lives.

4. Why do you feel inspired to help men in prison?

What truly inspire me about going into the prison is the HOPE that it brings to the men. Being able to go in and encourage them to see that there is life outside of the fences. The opportunity to minister to their heart and allow them to see that in Christ all things are possible. My heart is with the men because I once was a prisoner. Getting out and living a NEW LIFE in Christ is so amazing. Redemption in Jesus Christ is what truly allows us to be defined by who God has called us to be and no longer by what the world says who we are. I know how much it means to have the volunteers come in and show the love of Jesus to you. It’s very inspirational.

5. What do you enjoy the most in your volunteering for New Life Prison Community?

The family and ministry opportunity. Being able to pray together and worship together. Going into the prison, the only agenda we have is to show the love of Jesus to the men and staff. This is an opportunity to give back what I so freely received. What New Life is doing in obedience to serve the Lord fulfills one of the commands. Thank You!!

6. What’s next for Robbie Robinson?

I will continue to serve the kingdom of God with all of me. I have been praying faithfully for God to continue to challenge me and grow me. I need to be equipped and also ministered to. I want to grow as a leader for God’s mission field. My heart is to plant and make disciples for the kingdom. Trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding; but acknowledge Him in all that I do and He shall make my path straight! Proverbs 3:5-6

Apostle Paul informs us that the Word of God is certainly not a commodity to be
bought or sold. After Paul left the city
of Corinth to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to other places, the small house
church in the massive city was invaded by false prophets who puffed themselves
up with pride, claiming to be super apostles.
In response, Paul penned a second letter to the Corinthian believers,
encouraging them to reject false teachings and embrace grace. Paul boldly spills ink on the page: "Unlike
so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in
Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God." (2nd Corinthians

various Bibles are available for free, including outreach Bibles, Spanish

presence of God. May the New Year give

Many
people wander aimlessly through a life with a lower case letter "l",
breathing the air and eating the food. Failing
to grasp the deep meaning of possessing a soul, they merely exist on a daily
basis. Gazing at the mirror, they view
their own reflection and inspect a me
they see instead of the me God wants
them to be. Unfortunately the bottom
line is that some people are willing to just survive when God wants them to
thrive. Can it be true that God's desire
for us is that we refuse to settle for a life that's second best? Thanks be to God for the capacity to realize
that life isn't meant to be lived in the lower case. Instead we can truly live Life with a Capital
L in Christ. The giant L describes the Life with God. It's New
Life, Eternal Life, a Life of incredible fullness in Jesus Christ.

This
Life with a capital L is described decisively in the Gospel of John. As the Gospel writer John recognized, it is Father
God who initiates the action by sending His Son Jesus into a world in desperate
need (see John 3:16-17). It is only through Jesus that God does His
work inside us and among us, bringing about newness. Thanks be to God! In fact, John summarized the importance of
this fact in his Spirit-inspired purpose statement: "These are written
that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by
believing you may have life in his name."
(John 20:31) Truly the life of
fullness comes as a result of faith in Jesus Christ. In his important volume The Gospel of
John: A Commentary, Frederick Dale Bruner spells out this truth:
"John's Gospel believes that "Life" in the word's full sense
occurs only where there is trust in ... Jesus.
Life exists, in the Gospel's conviction, where there is no longer the
abysmal dread of death, the awful weight of guilt, the horrid emptiness of
meaninglessness, the lifeless absence of God, and the futile quest of the
world's multiple gods and idols. Life is
present wherever Jesus, and all that he means, is appreciated and finally
trusted." (p. 1196)

Sometimes
this Life is misunderstood as something received in the distant future when
Christ returns. However, God's intention
is for your Full Life with Him to begin right here and right now. Recently we completed a four week course at
the prison to prepare men for either baptism or profession of faith. The final class described the Christian
life. In summary, the Christian life
includes but is not limited to prayer, worship, walking the walk, love, service
and mission. One of the participants in
the class, Rodney now understands that his life in prison is full of
purpose. He writes to encourage fellow
inmates to "use this time in prison as a mission and not an intermission
in your life." Using prison as a
mission means seeking out hurting individuals who are hungry and thirsty for
the Lord. Rodney is practicing what he
preaches since he is one of a dozen men at the prison ready to begin the
Stephen Ministry program. Receiving the
Stephen Ministry training will enable Rodney to reach out skillfully and effectively
by giving quality Christian care to those in need. Rodney concludes these thoughts with a prayer
to his All Knowing Almighty Father that "I may whole heartedly follow your
mission for my life and bring glory to your Kingdom. In Jesus name I pray, Amen." Will you share Rodney's prayer? Pray that God's Spirit will move inside the members
of New Life Prison Community to create newness and Life with a Capital L. Pray too that God will invigorate your life
so it will become a purpose-filled Life that's lived well for Him.

If you made a mistake on your writing or math you simply grabbed your No. 2 pencil with the pink eraser and started over. God has an eraser too. One of the men in the prayer group gave me this Eraser poem recently. I hope you know about God's eraser and the freedom it can bring to you.
Here is a poem that Rick C. wrote after experiencing his first Brothers-in-Blue at Newton Prison this April.

We are Brothers-in-Blue
Drenched in Red
and Robed in White.

Praise God for Change!

Rick C. loved the worship times embedded in the Brothers-in-Blue. He often sat in the front row.

As for me I'm thankful to everyone who played a key role in the
Brothers-in-Blue event at Newton Prison on April 23-26. There were many New Life volunteers represented as well as others coming as far away as Spencer and Cedar Rapids. I'm especially grateful to Mark Willson - our fearless leader! Mark combined a nice balance of humor and spirituality.

This event helped men to discover a new way
of life while drawing closer to God. 62
inmates and 19 volunteers completed the program. Two of our volunteers were living, breathing role models for the men at the prison, having been locked up at one time in their past. Overall, it was an absolutely inspirational
event for all of us involved.

We were very grateful for the cooperation that we received
from the staff. We know that this
event is beneficial for the men to discover a new way of life as they draw closer
to God.

This is now the third year for the Brothers-in-Blue at NCF. I know that this event requires additional
effort from volunteers and staff. However, we trust that all this extra effort will be worthwhile due to the positive impact. It'd be great if this event could be held once
again in the spring of 2016. To paraphrase the famous words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, "We'll be BACK!"

You just need to open your eyes so that you can recognize them. One of our brothers in Christ wrote out the final verse of an inspirational Psalm - Psalm 19:14. It is quite familiar yet strikingly beautiful. It is prayerful, challenging the self to become the person he/she was created to be. It also reminds us that God is our Rock and our only source of salvation. He is the strong one who comes to bring about redemption. It's just one more reason to praise Him.

On the back of the baptism class booklet, one of the men at the prison drew this creative picture of what looks to be the "New Life Leaf" with an embedded cross. I like what this picture has to say. The green growth of inner transformation happens in and through the cross of Christ. He is the inspiration for us. If growth is to occur it must come in Christ, through Christ and for Christ. And that's just one more reason to praise Him.

not sure what experience you've had with spotlights. Maybe you've seen spotlights at a car
dealership shining a bright beam of light across the night sky. The idea is to get your attention so that
you'll be drawn in to the large inventory of brand new trucks, cars, and SUV's
fully equipped with four wheel drive so that you don't slip and slide through
the holiday streets. Hoping to sell you
a shiny new automobile or two, the car dealership uses the spotlight to make
you as mesmerized as a moth moving in on a light bulb in your garage.<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">The
marketplace may focus our attention on products to purchase but God calls us to
place the spotlight on Jesus. This call
didn't start in the last year or in the last decade or even in the last century. In fact, two thousand years ago John the
Baptist received God's call to put the spotlight squarely on Jesus, the Savior
of the World. Here are a few words in
John 1:8 about John the Baptist: "He himself was not the light; he came
only as a witness to the light."
It's an important point of clarification. It wasn't about John. It was all about Jesus Christ, the Good News
from God. And John fulfilled his mission
to call the people to repentance so they could fix their eyes on Jesus. That's where the spotlight belongs!<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">Certainly
we can learn a thing or two from the example of John the Baptist. It's not about us. It's all about Jesus. We also need to aim the spotlight directly on
the Savior. On a regular basis
volunteers enter prison to shine the Spotlight of Jesus in a very dark
place. Just this past weekend a group of
volunteers went into the Fort Dodge prison for a Brothers-in-Blue weekend. On this four day spiritual retreat, 49 men
were able to set aside their normal routines in order to focus their attention
squarely on Jesus. That's the focus of
New Life Prison Community volunteers too: the spotlight is on the One at center
stage. His name is Jesus.<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">Even
in these last few days before Christmas, God continues to call each one of us
to place the spotlight on Jesus. The
Christmas holiday season has a million and one distractions: Frosty the snowman
and Santa Claus, cookies and candy canes, gift wrap and ornaments, colorful
lights and giant inflatables on our front lawns. These things are not bad in and of themselves
but can sometimes distract us from focusing on the Babe born in Bethlehem. How
you will shine the spotlight on Jesus this Christmas? Maybe you'll take a few moments to reflect on
the Gift from Heaven before opening your Christmas gifts piled under the
tree. Maybe you'll sing Silent Night or
Joy to the World before devouring your Christmas dinner. Maybe you'll read the Christmas story in Luke
2 for your family devotions. These are
just a few ideas. Don't limit
yourself. Instead think creatively as to
how you and the ones you love can focus your spotlight on Jesus.<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">

Yesterday I attended the High School Graduation at the prison. One of the teachers in the education department at the Newton Prison invited me to attend. Formerly this was called the GED program but now it's called the HiSET - high school equivalency test. Anyway I'm glad I attended. I'm proud of all the graduates for what they've accomplished. It's a big deal for guys who are locked up to finally finish what they've started. It gives them a feeling of satisfaction that they can overcome obstacles in order to realize their goals. One of the men graduating had recently been baptized at our November worship service. He was one of the keynote speakers and emphasized "perseverance" in his talk. Perseverance is so important in the Christian life too! Two other graduates had made profession of faith at the November worship service in the prison gym. One of them was actually the valedictorian of the class having scored quite well. This man is very quiet in our New Life small groups but if you look at him it appears from his face that he is processing things internally all the time. His brain is engaged even though he doesn't contribute much to the discussion. His teachers are encouraging him to go to college because his mind is sharp. When I spoke with him afterwards I asked him what his best subject was in school. He said mathematics - that was always a strong point for me too. Overall it was a feel good moment to attend the graduation ceremony - the men were in cap & gown and also had family members there to witness the proud moment. I really enjoyed it and hope to attend in future years!Rick Admiraalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10805696840873569589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5726556569367028825.post-34478370983535555032014-12-03T08:09:00.000-08:002014-12-03T08:09:53.072-08:00Baptism & Profession of Faith

On November 20, New Life had a Thanksgiving Service in the Newton Prison Gym. Featured prominently were baptism and profession of faith. A high-water mark was reached in both: 11 men were baptized and 5 men professed their faith in Jesus Christ. Glory be to God!

Here are some words from two men who participated. Denny was the last in line to be baptized. As it says in the Word, "The first will be last." Denny had to wait a LONG TIME to be baptized. He said he first believed when he was 10 years old out in Oregon but his family was not religious. So he waited until now… Here are Denny's words: "I wish to thank everyone from New Life. I was truly blessed by my baptism. I had wished to be baptized for FORTY YEARS. Thank you to my extended New Life family. They truly are a light in a dark place. For the giver of new life truly is Jesus Christ. Jesus answered, 'Verily, verily I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.' (John 3:5) Thank you to everyone that attended my baptism. The transformation is amazing. Sincerely a Spirit-filled believer at the Newton Prison."

Matt was one of the 5 guys to make a stand for Christ and profess faith in Christ. He reads from Psalm 27:1-5 every day as it is a great encouragement to him. Here is the first verse of that Psalm ~ "The LORD is my light and my salvation - whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid?" Matt understands that the reason for these worship services is "to plant seeds in people's hearts to bring them to Christ." He took encouragement in seeing two men who were recently baptized reading the Word of God together back at their housing unit. Here are a few more words from Matt: "When I professed my faith, it helped me in so many ways. For a long time, I never wanted help with anything and at times felt unworthy. Though I sometimes struggle still, God makes me feel worthy. God has shaped me in ways I myself can't understand. I don't think I'm supposed to understand it but just live as he's making me into a better man so that I can be fulfilled in His name. Thank you all! Thank you Lord for everything including my memories of loved ones. You are a blessing to me. Love you all. Thank you for all your help and prayers." Rick Admiraalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10805696840873569589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5726556569367028825.post-4650518071502872082014-10-25T07:42:00.002-07:002014-10-25T07:42:27.086-07:00Ministry Report

We had stops in Ephesians 1, 3, and 6 learning that you can pray the prayers of Scripture. Our final lesson was about the armor of God! As you can imagine, the armor of God is extremely useful in the prison setting where spiritual warfare is extremely intense!

On Thursdays, we've been viewing the DVD "Satisfied" by Jeff Manion. So far it's been really interesting.

Manion, the lead pastor of Ada Bible Church in Michigan, takes a hard look at all our stuff. Manion reminds us that our identity is in Christ not in all our material possessions. In the last session (we're at the midway point), Manion brought in a quote from Fred Rogers (the children's show host was also a Presbyterian Minister) - "The older I get, the more I've come to believe that nothing I buy can
take away my loneliness, fill my emptiness, or heal my brokenness." Overall this has been a tremendous study.

Both groups have been well attended. We've been averaging 15-20 men on Tuesday afternoons and 25-30+ men on Thursday nights! May the Spirit of the Living God continue to move behind prison walls!

On Thursday, August 21 New Life will be hosting visitors from Lynnville Friends Church. The prison gym will hold an inspired worship service. Pastor Mark Porter will share his testimony and a message from God's Word about being "Called." Julie Jones will lead the praise team but also share with the men in prison something important she's planning to do in September. Embracing the challenge, Julie is ready to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise support for One Child Matters. Watch the video to find out more…
On Tuesday afternoons we've been studying the Lord's Prayer at our prison prayer group. So far so good. It's been a highly beneficial study and the group of men attending has been inspired. One man was moved to write this Acrostic Poem summing up the Lord's Prayer. He is a deliberative person so he took his time and did a good job. See what you think.

This year, three bicycle riders
support New Life in their fourth Pedal for Prisoners. Unfortunately we'll be going our separate
ways. Due to a family wedding, Pastor
Rick will be opting out of RAGBRAI.
Instead, he'll ride TOMRV XXXVII.
TOMRV is shorthand for Tour of the Mississippi River Valley. It's a two day ride in early June featuring gigantic
hills and epic views. Corrine will ride
in late July, tackling her 18th RAGBRAI - Register's Annual Great Bike Ride
Across Iowa. The route for RAGBRAI XLII
is a fairly flat journey across northern Iowa but still covers 418 miles in one
week. Corrine's
ride will traverse Iowa from West to East, starting in Rock Valley and ending
in Guttenberg. The riders will enjoy Lake Okoboji and Mason City, hometown of the Music Man! Finally Bill Schinkel rides in August - Bike Van Buren XXVIII. This two day ride covers the scenic country
in and around Keosauqua, Iowa. Bill has
done this ride before; he loves it so much he's doing it again! Even
though we're doing different bike rides, we're united
in our devotion to New Life Prison Community. We're all riding for one purpose - helping
New Life make a huge impact on the men at the Newton Prison. Will you support New Life financially by sponsoring
one of us?

June 8 is Pentecost Sunday in the life of the church. On that day we celebrate the great day two thousand years ago when the Holy Spirit came with power. Imagine what it would have been like to be present in that incredible moment and hear Peter preach the Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ. The results of that sermon were spectacular. The Scripture informs us that "Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day." (Acts 2:41) Three thousand! What a big splash that must've made! Imagine the Tsunami wave of the Spirit that must have roared across the world to make an earth-shattering impact for the Gospel!

Sometimes we misunderstand the work of the Holy Spirit. We get caught up dramatic spiritual gifts such as prophecy, faith healing, and speaking in tongues. When we focus on the charismatic gifts it's possible to miss the primary work of the Holy Spirit: pointing us to Jesus Christ. Frederick Dale Bruner wrote an influential book entitled The Holy Spirit - Shy Member of the Trinity. It's a short book (only 112 pages) but it makes an important point: In His "shyness" the Holy Spirit would prefer to direct our attention to Jesus Christ. Bruner informs: "The work of the Holy Spirit is simply to thrill us with Christ, to infect us with enthusiasm for all that Christ can do for men and women and for the world to change things, to renew institutions, and to salvage lives." If the Holy Spirit were part of a theatrical production, he would find himself backstage operating the lights in order to shine the spotlight on the leading actor at center stage: Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit is at work at the Newton Prison, moving men behind bars to follow Jesus Christ. One man that comes to mind immediately is Mark (not his real name). Only 19 years old Mark first came to prison early this spring. He was eager to show me the rap music lyrics that he had written down on notebook paper. Initially his lyrics emphasized the darkness in his soul, containing four letter words and references to death and hell. I told Mark that God wanted to give him just the opposite of those things. In place of darkness, light. Instead of death, life. Replacing hell, heaven. Gradually the Holy Spirit began to turn Mark's life around. He attended Brothers-in-Blue, a four day spiritual retreat, and committed his life to Jesus Christ during the weekend. Lord willing, Mark will be baptized at the June 19th worship service in the Newton Prison gym. I won't pretend that it's easy for Mark. In fact, every day finds him in a struggle between the forces of good and evil. However, you can clearly see the joy on Mark's face that wasn't there before he met Jesus Christ. That's exactly what the power of the Holy Spirit accomplishes!

Directing you to Jesus Christ is exactly what the Holy Spirit's power can do for you too. If you don't know Jesus Christ already, the Spirit can lead you gently by the hand to the Bible where you can find the key to salvation in John 3:16, Acts 4:12 and Romans 5:10. If you're already a believer, the Holy Spirit can encourage you to discover a deeper walk with God by dedicating your life entirely to Jesus Christ. May Pentecost Sunday provide you an opportunity to investigate further the work of the Holy Spirit whose deepest desire is for you to follow Jesus Christ.
Some states (Maine & Vermont) actually allow prisoners to vote by absentee ballot while they are locked up! Iowa, however, has played a political game with the democratic governor going in one direction and the republican governor going back the other way. Who will rise above it all and actually do the right thing?

Iowa - On Jan. 14, 2011, the Republican Governor of Iowa, Terry Branstad, issued executive order 70, rescinding a law allowing people convicted of a felony to automatically have their ability to vote restored after completing their sentences. The automatic voting restoration law had been instituted by former Democratic Governor Tom Vilsack's signing of executive order 42 in 2005. Felons in Iowa must now pay all outstanding monetary obligations to the court in addition to completing their sentence and period of parole or probation. People convicted of a felony may then apply for restoration of the ability to vote.

Executive Order 70 - Signed Jan. 14, 2011, Terry Branstad, Governor (R)
Piercing the Darkness rocked the prison on May 3. In my opinion it was their best concert yet. It was both electrifying and inspiring. The sound quality was outstanding. The vocals were dynamic and the instruments were awesome too. I grew up in the 80's so I have a big appreciation of rock music. And PTD puts on an incredible show. The band had the music going but a stage presence too. They charged up and down the middle aisle and entertained. But this music was more than just mere entertainment - it was God glorifying. The music gave glory to the Father, glory to the Son, and glory to the Spirit. The music gave witness to the good news of Jesus Christ. In addition, the lead guitar player's wife gave personal testimony in between two lengthy sets. Her testimony captured the attention of the 150 men in attendance at the prison gym. She gave a persuasive talk encouraging men to come to repentance and faith, living a life marked by forgiveness. I hope Piercing the Darkness returns - their service to God and man is greatly appreciated. A big thanks to Steve and the rest of the band!!!

Here's a sample of their music - PTD's hit song - "More than Human." Enjoy!
Thursday I went to the National Day of Prayer breakfast in Newton. I was asked to pray for the prison. Would you pray too? Here is a prayer card to help you pray for the prison, the prison officials, and the prisoner. Don't forget that Hebrews 13:3 calls us to "remember those in prison as if we ourselves were prisoners." May our gracious God mold each of us into people of prayer!Rick Admiraalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10805696840873569589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5726556569367028825.post-65392006437348980442014-03-08T08:19:00.000-08:002014-03-08T08:19:27.877-08:00Hope for the AbuserThe Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ brings about Hope. And I strive to present the Hope of Christ to the prisoner. God's Spirit moves me to inspire the incarcerated ones with Hope. It's a fact that there is Hope for men in prison. This Hope applies even for men locked up on account of domestic abuse. One of the men in my prison congregation is locked up due to a domestic abuse assault - his 3rd such offense. It is a persistent problem not only for him but also for the women in his life. Something needs to be done. That's where God's grace enters in and changes him from within by the Holy Spirit. All things are being made new in Jesus Christ. The other day he was sharing with me some of the things he's been learning in his domestic abuse class at the Newton prison. It may not be brand new information for him but perhaps it reinforces what he already knows. Besides this cognitive head knowledge desperately needs to sink deep within so that it influences his actions.

Here's what he told me about the cycle of abuse in a dysfunctional relationship. It's all about actions and reactions. Disrespect / Angry words and Hatred / violence mark a pattern within the abusive relationship. Often substance abuse is part of the package as well. The abuser might act out when he's not in his right mind if he's drunk or high on drugs. Another sad fact is that more often than not the abuser was abused himself at an earlier stage of life.

But when the Spirit enters into a man, things begin to change. Circles of love and respect replace hatred/abuse/violence/disrespect. It's more of a response than a reaction because it is a dramatic alteration of the will. He acts with love, she responds with respect. She sees evidence that his heart has been softened by the presence of God. Of course all this takes time and accountability but I believe the renewal of the Spirit of Jesus Christ can bring hope even to broken relationships marked by patterns of abuse.

Happy New Year! The brand new year is only 3 days old and I want to let you know what's in store for 2014. Here are some big events for New Life Prison Community early in 2014.
This worship service will focus on the Word of God. The text is from Romans 10. Part of our emphasis that evening will be to give testimony to the Word of God. Inmate-members and volunteers will share their testimonies of what God is doing in their lives.
April - In the early spring, Newton will host Brothers-in-Blue. This four day spiritual retreat was incredible in 2013. We can't wait to see what God will do at the 2014 B.I.B. The men at the prison are already asking about this awesome event focused on spiritual transformation.Rick Admiraalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10805696840873569589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5726556569367028825.post-91613254824628586942014-01-03T09:19:00.000-08:002014-01-03T09:19:41.902-08:00Not a Fan

We just finished up the 6th session of the 6 part DVD series - Not a Fan. Not a Fan is a book by Kyle Idleman emphasizing that every believer needs to move from being a fan of Jesus to becoming a completely committed follower of Jesus. Kyle informs us: "It's the cross that separates fans from followers." Becoming a follower is not a human work; instead, God transforms us through the power of the Holy Spirit. Not a Fan was a great Thursday night study and the guys at the prison really appreciated this series. It was inspirational to say the least. A typical Thursday started by singing a few songs together that emphasized surrender to Christ or the Lordship of Christ. After the singing was finished, we would move into a time of prayer. Then we would watch the DVD and discuss what we learned together. One of the men at the prison has read Kyle's book THREE times. Needless to say, he loved the book and found it beneficial to his life. He also loved the Thursday night DVD study. In fact, I don't think he missed a single session! Here are some of his comments. "I love the chapter in Kyle's book called The Unedited Version. The unedited version is that you have to die daily. This is not the watered down version of the gospel that some churches present. I'm the 'anyone' that's mentioned in Luke 9:23 - Then Jesus said to them all, 'If anyone wants to become my follower, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.' I qualify because I'm anyone - and that makes me special. I can follow too!" Overall, Not a Fan was a great study - next week Thursday we'll continue by watching the feature film - A Follower's Story. Then we'll move on to whatever "next-step" God has in store for us...
